"IGNORANCE IS STRENGTH"

"Are we to have a censor whose imprimatur shall say what books may be sold, and what we may buy? And who is thus to dogmatize religious opinions for our citizens?  Whose foot is to be the measure to which ours are all to be cut or stretched? Is a priest to be our inquisitor, or shall a layman, simple as ourselves, set up his reason as the rule of what we are to read, and what we must disbelieve?"

                                                                                                          Thomas Jefferson

(in a letter to N. G. Dufief, Philadelphia bookseller, 1814, on the occasion of prosecution for selling De Becourt's "Sur le Creation du Monde, un Systeme d'Organisation Primitive")

Paul Krugman. The Great Unraveling: Losing Our Way in the New Century. The national bestseller: A galvanizing work from America's leading economic critic—a book that will set the terms of the political debate for years to come. Paul Krugman writes a twice-weekly column for the New York Times. A winner of the John Bates Clark medal for the best American economist under forty, he teaches at Princeton University.

No one has more authority to call the shots the way they really are than Paul Krugman, whose provocative New York Times columns are keenly followed by millions. One of the world's most respected economists, Krugman has been named America's most important columnist by the Washington Monthly and columnist of the year by Editor and Publisher magazine.
"The title of Paul Krugman's The Great Unraveling might well have been The Great Usurpation. In a republic hijacked by the radical right whose leaders reject the legitimacy of our current political system, Paul Krugman's coruscant book calls for a "great revulsion" across the land before it is too late."—David Levering Lewis, author of W.E.B. DuBois: Biography of a Race

Dean Baker. The Conservative Nanny State: How the Wealthy Use the Government to Stay Rich and Get Richer. Dean Baker debunks the myth that conservatives favor the market over government intervention. In fact, conservatives rely on a range of “nanny state” policies that ensure the rich get richer while leaving most Americans worse off. It’s time for the rules to change. Sound economic policy should harness the market in ways that produce desirable social outcomes – decent wages, good jobs and affordable health care.

Dave Lindorff. This Can't Be Happening! Resisting the Disintegration of Democracy

Brave New World (1932) Aldous Huxley. Brave New World has come to serve as the false symbol for any regime of universal happiness. In Brave New World, Huxley contrives to exploit the anxieties of his bourgeois audience about both Soviet Communism and Fordist American capitalism. He taps into, and then feeds, our revulsion at Pavlovian-style behavioural conditioning and eugenics. Worse, it is suggested that the price of universal happiness will be the sacrifice of the most hallowed shibboleths of our culture: "motherhood", "home", "family", "freedom", even "love". The exchange yields an insipid happiness that's unworthy of the name. Its evocation arouses our unease and distaste. In BNW, happiness derives from consuming mass-produced goods, sports such as Obstacle Golf and Centrifugal Bumble-puppy, promiscuous sex, "the feelies", and most famously of all, a supposedly perfect pleasure-drug, soma. As perfect pleasure-drugs go, soma underwhelms. It's not really a utopian wonderdrug at all. It does make you high. Yet it's more akin to a hangoverless tranquilliser or an opiate - or a psychic anaesthetising SSRI like Prozac - than a truly life-transforming elixir. Third-millennium neuropharmacology, by contrast, will deliver a vastly richer product-range of designer-drugs to order.

1984

www.enotes.com/1984/:Published in 1948 and set thirty-six years in the future, 1984 is George Orwell’s dark vision of the future. Written while Orwell was dying and based on the work of the Russian author Yevgeny Zamyatin, it is a chilling depiction of how the power of the state could come to dominate the lives of individuals through cultural conditioning. Perhaps the most powerful science fiction novel of the twentieth century, this apocalyptic satire shows with grim conviction how Winston Smith’s individual personality is wiped out and how he is recreated in the Party’s image until he does not just obey but even loves Big Brother. Some critics have related Winston Smith’s sufferings to those Orwell underwent at preparatory school, experiences he wrote about just before 1984. Orwell maintained that the book was written with the explicit intention “to alter other people’s idea of the kind of society they should strive after.” "WAR IS PEACE, FREEDOM IS SLAVERY, IGNORANCE IS STRENGTH"

Justice Department says bookstore customers have no right to privacy. From the American Booksellers for Free Expression newsletter:

The American people surrender their right of privacy when they buy books in bookstores or borrow them from libraries, Assistant Attorney General Daniel J. Bryant declared in a letter to Senator Patrick J. Leahy of Vermont last month. Last summer, Leahy questioned the Justice Department about its vastly expanded authority to search the records of bookstores and libraries under Section 215 of the USA Patriot Act. “Do you think that library and bookstore patrons have a ‘reasonable expectation of privacy’ in the titles of books they have purchased from a bookstore or borrowed from a library,” Leahy asked.

On December 23, Bryant replied: “Any right of privacy possessed by library and bookstore patrons in such information is necessarily and inherently limited since, by the nature of these transactions, the patron is reposing that information in the library or bookstore and assumes the risk that the entity may disclose it to another.”

From the same newsletter, Justice flouts the Freedom of Information Act and refuses to reveal how many times it has used its Power under the Patriot Act to subpoena the records of bookstores and libraries in a suit filed in October by the ABFFE, ACLU and the Freedom to Read Foundation. A hearing is expected in February.

Congressmen Bernie Sanders of Vermont pledged to try to amend the Patriot Act to "eliminate provisions in the USA Patriot Act that undermine Americans' Constitutionally guaranteed right to read and access information without governmental intrusion or monitoring."

ORWELL ROLLS IN HIS GRAVE is the consummate critical examination of the Fourth Estate, once the bastion of American democracy. Asking whether America has entered an Orwellian world of doublespeak where outright lies can pass for the truth, and explores what the media doesn’t like to talk about: itself. Meticulously tracing the process by which media has distorted and often dismissed actual news events, Director Robert Kane Pappas presents a riveting and eloquent mix of media professionals and leading intellectual voices on the media.
